A.J. Fernandez History

AJ was born in Cuba in 1979. His grandfather, Andres Fernandez, first started growing tobacco in Cuba before the days of Fidel Castro. A.J. began his career in tobacco working on a Cuban tobacco farm at the age of 13.

In 2003 AJ moved from Cuba to Nicaragua. He started manufacturing his own cigars sometime in the mid Aughts. He started with only 6 cigar rollers. Rather than launch his own brand from the beginning, A.J. private labeled cigars for other companies, including Rocky Patel and Cigars International. A.J. is behind the “Man O’ War” and “Diesel” lines launched in 2009.

Since then there has been no turning back. In 2010 A.J. brought back the San Lotano brand. This is the brand his grandfather made in Cuba before the Cuban Revolution. A.J. has also released his own brand of cigars, including the New World, Enclave, Last Call, and Bellas Artes lines. In 2013 he built his cigar factory, Tabacalera A.J. Ferandez Cigars de Nicaragua, on the outskirts of Estelí.

Recently he has collaborated with tons of makers. Everyone from Montecristo to boutique makers like Matt Booth and Robert Caldwell. These days A.J.’s name is being attached to all sorts of brands and his cigar factory pumps out over 14 million cigars a year while his farms cultivate more than 600 acres of tobacco. This is for good reason, as A.J. makes some incredible blends, and he is easily one of the most talented “new breed” blenders of our day.
